Pretzels, peas, pansies, and pilfering

Lisa got a lot of flour for Christmas. I mean, A LOT. In addition to the flour we already had, we
maxed at over 30 pounds of flour in our freezer and fridge.

Don't think I'm complaining, though. If there is one thing I love, it's carbohydrates. A few weekends ago, Lisa was busy making bread and pancakes (or was it waffles?) simultaneously. I think I hit the jackpot.

Last weekend, she entered the new world of pretzel making. Yum.

Right now she is busy in the kitchen making naan....can you smell it?

Our winter has been pretty mild this year, and although we are still waiting for it to start, the calendar says we should get ready for it to end. So, it is officially pea season. We started the seeds indoors by placing them in wet paper towels, and when they began to sprout, we set them out. Here they are today, just showing their heads above ground:

Our trellis is already up and ready, even though it will be a few months before the peas are big enough to need it. We are doing things a bit differently this year as you may notice; we made the flower garden a little bigger (bedded down with pine straw in this photo) and let the main veggie garden fill in, minus a little strip for peas and maybe an eggplant or 2 as the summer kicks in.

It was a little hard to decide to fill in the garden, but the last 2 summers were so brutal and it was impossible to keep up with it. We still have our raised bed, and we'll focus more energy on our containers, since everything seems to do well there. Pennywort, I raise my white flag and surrender the yard back to you. I can't believe I thought I had a chance...

Things are looking pretty good in the front yard, too. Our magnolia bush is putting on new buds, and you can see our little yellow pansies we planted to give the garden some winter color. We saved them off the "I'm dying" rack at Lowe's -- got about 24 of them for $5. None of them have died. Yet.

What's new with the pets you ask? Well, Vivian has a new stolen item of choice lately: the cat's food. Not the actual kibbles, but the container of cat food. We were a bit amazed that she routinely chooses this rather cumbersome container, and I have yet to personally see her do it. Lisa was lucky enough to catch her the other day and got the tail end of the escapade on film for your viewing pleasure:

And never play hide-and-seek with Caretta. It's boring:
